THE 19TH ANNUAL WEST COAST CONTACT IMPROVISATION FESTIVAL
IN BERKELEY'S 8TH STREET STUDIOS, JUNE 29-JULY 4, 2007

(Berkeley, CA) The 19th annual West Coast Contact Improvisation Festival (WCCIF) will be held at 8th Street Studios in Berkeley, CA, from June 29 to July 4. This year we have a theme - Deepening the Experience - that will enliven and inform all of the classes, labs, discussions, performances and jams. We offer interconnected classes within three tracks - Performance, Somatics and Community - that will allow participants to explore specific aspects of contact improvisation in depth. Classes are available for professional dancers and people new to Contact Improvisation interested in learning in a safe and respectful community.

Sharon Tomsky CI and Feldenkrais/Anat Baniel Methods – A Potent Convergence.

Sharon has been enthusiastically involved with Contact Improvisation since the late 1970s, and has been teaching CI since 1981. She is a co-founder of this Contact Festival and has been teaching at it since its inception in 1988, and was an organizer for the first 3 years. Sharon also co-founded the California “Harbin” Contact Jam and co-organized and facilitated it for 18 years. She is a somatic educator with certifications as a Feldenkrais Method and Anat Baniel Method practitioner, including specializations in ABM for Children, Anti-Aging, and High Performers. Moshe Feldenkrais was the first non-Japanese person to earn a black belt in Judo and was the author of several books on Judo and self-defense. His interest, training and expertise in these areas had a profound influence on the development of the Feldenkrais Method. We will use the movement lessons created by Dr. Feldenkrais to explore the martial arts underpinnings of the Feldenkrais Method, and experience and analyze self-defense techiniques as they arise, helping us to understand the effectiveness of the Feldenkrais Method from the point of view of survival. This workshop will give you a direct experience of how the martial arts can be informed by the unique work of Dr. Feldenkrais.
